Guiseley Lose Highly-Rated Keeper To Milk Boys

By Steve Whitney

Guiseley AFC have suffered a blow with the news that highly-rated goalkeeper Jonny Maxted has left to join SkyBet League Two side Accrington Stanley.

Maxted impressed Stanley so much with his performance against them in this season’s Emirates FA Cup that they have come in to sign him for an undisclosed fee.

Maxted, 25, has signed an eighteen-month contract with The Milk Boys after impressing them with a string of fine saves in the original tie which ended 0-0 and then again in the replay, when he added two penalty saves in the penalty shoot-out that saw Guiseley progress to the Second Round for the first time in their history back in November.

Maxted has played fifty-nine games for Guiseley since first joining on a three-month loan spell from Forest Green Rovers at the start of September 2016 .

The deal was then made permanent in January 2017 and he went on to win the supporters’ player of the season award.

Raised in Boston Spa, the former Doncaster Rovers stopper is the nephew of one of the 1991 FA Vase heroes, goalkeeper Paul Maxted.

At Doncaster, Maxted made it to the first-team subs bench at the age of 16 and gained experience in loan spells at Goole AFC and Gainsborough Trinity.

After leaving Doncaster he spent some time at Hartlepool United before joining Forest Green at the start of the 2015/16 season.
