Five Things You May Have Missed In The National League

By Steven Coney

The Vanarama National League continues to heat up and Saturday produced some more important results.

It was another weekend of big results, big goals and big talking points across our three divisions.

There was plenty to keep your eye on so here are five things you may have missed across the National League…

Better late than never for the Silkmen!

It looked like Macclesfield’s lead at the National League’s summit was going to be reduced to three points as Maidenhead continued to frustrate them on Saturday. Step up striker Scott Wilson. The forward headed home in the first minute of added time to give the Silkmen a vital win - they remain five points clear.

It was a bad weekend for those at the bottom

Or the ones that were in action at least! Barrow, Solihull Moors and Torquay United were all without a game with other clubs involved in the FA Trophy but the trio would have been very pleased on Saturday evening. Bottom club Guiseley were well beaten at Sutton United, Chester went down late on at Dagenham and Hartlepool United’s miserable run continued with defeat against Ebbsfleet.

Play-off places are there to be claimed

Just a few weeks ago, Daryl McMahon was writing off Ebbsfleet’s play-off hopes. Following Saturday’s 1-0 success at Hartlepool, they’re only outside the top seven on goal difference! Their Kent rivals Dover Athletic have slipped to ninth with AFC Fylde climbing back into the play-off places. Bromley and Dagenham are both keeping in touch - who will be in the end of season shake-up?

Salford show their class off the pitch

The Ammies missed out on the chance of reclaiming top spot in National League North after their home game against Tamworth was called off late in the day. However, Salford didn’t let the food prepared for the game go to waste. Bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley dropped off over 150 pies, vats of soup and cheesecakes to a homeless centre.

National League South high-flyers back on track

The top two have stalled slightly in recent weeks but Dartford safely navigated a tricky game against Truro City on Saturday whilst Hampton & Richmond Borough did just enough to overcome strugglers Bognor Regis. St Albans City also picked up a big win and Havant & Waterlooville earned a point at Hemel Hempstead. The only side to miss out? Chelmsford City - they lost 2-0 at Oxford City.
