Coyle: Wings Now Have An Identity

Welling United don’t seem to know when they are beaten. On Saturday, for the second week running, they battled back from two goals down to claim a share of the spoils.

After showing their battling qualities against Concord Rangers at Park View Road, they did it again at Hemel Hempstead - a side, like them, with designs on promotion.

Player-boss Jamie Coyle spoke after and said that the club’s sudden surge up the table is down to the fact that they had a huge summer rebuild to contend with.

Coyle says the 2-2 draw at Vauxhall Road typified their campaign as a whole - a start they didn’t want to make but it didn’t take long to burst into life.

“We had a really sloppy start to the game - we didn’t turn up early on, we gave away a poor penalty and didn’t look at the races,” he said. “The two subs came on at half-time and it totally changed things for us.

“Hemel are unbeaten in their last six, so I am over the moon with the result. We are a little inconsistent with the way we are starting games, but there’s no doubting the character.”

Midfield Joe Healy got the headlines thanks to his stunning half-way line equaliser. You can see his goal and the rest of the action here.

“Joe is a class act - he is showing the desire all players should look at,” Coyle said.

“At the start of our season it was really tough, we had 17 new players signed and we knew it would take a while to get our identity as a team. We've found it.

“It’s starting to come together now. It’s crazy - we’re only a few points off the top, but we need to try and put another great run together.

“There is still a lot of improvement needed, but to come away from home and be 2-0 down and then find the spirit to come back and take something then it’s brilliant.”
