Dagger Howell Has The Title Know How Three Years On

Having already won the league as a player with Luton Town, Dagenham’s Jake Howells is fully qualified to say what’s needed to get into the Football League.

In 2014 as a key park of John Still’s team the Hatters were champions and the midfielder wants to do the same under the stewardship of the veteran manager this season.

The 26-year-old is chipping in, too. He scored directly from a corner to earn a point at Solihull Moors last weekend and we caught up with the former Ebbsfleet and Eastleigh man to discuss this weekend’s match with bottom-of-the-league Torquay United.

“Obviously scoring in the last minute is always a nice feeling, strange way of it happening by going straight in from my corner but that's football!

“You never know, it could prove out to be massive point come the end of the season and nice way to get my first goal for Dagenham as well.

“I think we have started the season fairly strong and we are right in the mix, we probably could have had couple more points but the league is so tight - I think if we can get on a good run of results then we can hopefully get to the top of the table and stay there.”

Torquay will be looking for a reaction. New manager Gary Owers told the Gulls’ players that their efforts at at home Macclesfield fell short of his expectation.

Many will have this down as a home banker on the coupon but Howells has been in this league long enough to know that’s certainly not the case.

“Saturday won't be a easy game for us, Torquay will work hard to stop us,” Howells added.

“They need a result and we want to get back to winning ways as well. If we play the way we know we can then we know we can beat or at least match everyone in this league.

“The league is tough as I found out with Luton but I think our squad is strong enough to get promotion.”
