Askey Says It Is A Proud Day For His Table Topping Silkmen

John Askey the Macclesfield Town boss was delighted after his side went to the top of the Vanarama National League table after beating Guiseley 2-1.

The Silkmen gained a late victory at Nethermoor Park thanks to Elliott Durrell's strike with just minutes of the match to go, writes Tom Feaheny.

While fans sang we are top of the league, this was down to result elsewhere going their way.

"It is early days yet but to be top of the league is something I am very proud of, we need to keep the momemtum going but we are showing what we are capable of," Askey said to the club's website.

"We controlled the game second-half, we were clinical when the chance came and it just shows how well we are doing right now."

"The group are winning at the moment, the confidence is high and we are taking that into games."

It was a special evening for Danny Whitaker who made his 400th appearance and he capped the night off with a goal as Askey praised him.

"He is a really good player, throughout his career he has got goals, he has an engine that never runs out and I don't know what I'd do without him sometimes."

Macclesfield Town next take on Ebbsfleet United with Askey saying he knows what to expect.

"Every game is tough, Ebbsfleet are a good side who haven't lost many so we know we will have to be at our best."
