History

Boreham Wood Football Club celebrated its 65th Anniversary in the 2012/13 season, having been formed in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez. In its formative years the club progressed through the Mid-Herts League, Parthenon League, Spartan League, and Athenian League before being promoted to the Isthmian Football League in 1974/75.

It won the Division Two Championship in 1976/77 by sixteen points. The club then had a five season spell in the Premier Division during the late seventies and early eighties, and enjoyed another much more successful spell in the Premier Division, during the nineties, which sadly ended in relegation at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

However, the club bounced back quickly and were once again promoted back to the Premier Division as the Ryman Football League Division One Champions in 2000/01. Over the years the club has had many successes in FA Cup Competitions, as well as in the Hertfordshire and London FA Senior Challenge Cups. Boreham Wood also reached the final of the Isthmian League Full Members Cup in 1994/95 and 1995/96 and won the Isthmian League Cup in 1996/97.

Following the Football Association restructuring of Non-League Football in 2004, Boreham Wood competed in the Southern Football League Division One East for two seasons, winning the championship in 2005/06. Following that promotion the club returned to the Ryman Football League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season.

In the FA Trophy (the non-league fa cup), the Club went on an incredible cup run actually reaching the Semi-Finals in 2005/06. We are to this day, the lowest ranked team ever to have reached the last four of this prestigious tournament.

The 2009/10 season was a very memorable one, that saw the club finish 4th in its Ryman league campaign and went on to take part in a the play-offs for the first time. After defeating Aveley 1-0 away in the Semi-Final, the club went on to beat Kingstonian 2-0 at home in the final of the Ryman Premier League Play Offs and deservedly took its place in the Conference South.

After that promotion, a poor start to the 2010/11 league campaign, saw us struggle initially to sit bottom at Christmas but the team recovered well to finish in a respectful fourteenth place in the table…The 2011/12 season saw us build on our 14th place and achieve a very respectable 8th in the Conference South, to finish ever closer to the coveted play-off spots.

The 2012/13 season saw the club start very well but finish equally poorly and we ended up after a promising start in a disappointing 9th place. However the story of our season was that we got to the FA Cup First Round against Brentford at Meadow Park, after a memorable 3-2 win against Hayes & Yeading in the 4th qualifying round, which saw us come from two-nil down after five minutes, to win the game 3-2 in the last few minutes.

The 2013/14 Season ended in Herts senior cup success after beating Bishops Stortford on penalties in the final. However a poor start in the league meant the club had a relegation battle on its hands for the majority of the season. However a fine cup run, saw us again reach the first round proper in the FA Cup and culminated in us holding league one Carlisle United to a 0-0 draw at Meadow Park..

Following the stalemate we went to Brunton Park in the replay, put on a magnificent performance that saw us lead 1-0 up until the 82nd minute. It was not though to be the fairytale ending we’d hoped for, as two late Carlisle goals broke Wood fans hearts and sent us back to Hertfordshire empty handed.. An improvement in league form though after Christmas saw the team pull clear of the drop zone and the side finished strongly ending in a respectable 13thplace.

In 2013 we got the go ahead to build a brand new 890 Seated West Stand. The project was completed in May 2014 and was officially opened by Mr Arsene Wenger in front of a crowd of 3400, before our Pre-Season friendly against an Arsenal First Team on Saturday 19th July 2014.

2014/15 was undoubtedly the most successful season in Boreham Wood Football Clubs 67 year history. After leading the Conference South league for the majority of the season we finally finished second to eventual champions Bromley and took our place in the playoffs. After beating Havant and Waterlooville 2-0 away and drawing 2-2 at home in the two legged semi final.

We faced a talented Whitehawk side at our home of Meadow park in front of a partisan 2,200 crowd. A Lee Angol set piece put us ahead before a Whitehawk penalty levelled proceedings. However a Junior Morias winner in extra time sent the club into raptures, sent the town into overdrive and put us into the new National league for the very first time..

With the Chairman overseeing 3 promotions in nine seasons. With over 10 million pounds worth of ground and facility investment spent in his 16 year tenure. Sound structures are now in place, for the club to ensure it utilises its facilities 52 weeks of the year.

We now have the largest football/education scheme in the country with over 500 scholars recruited for season 2015/16. As such optimism has once again returned to Meadow Park and the future of Boreham Wood Football Club is looking bright.
