Allen: I Expected My Chesterfield To Be Very Near The Top

Martin Allen openly admits he though Chesterfield would be up near the top of the National League at this stage.

The Spireites made some great summer signings and begun so well with three straight victories.

But things have fallen to pieces in the past eight matches as their great start unravelled.

Six defeats and two draws against sides in the bottom four since has taken the wind out of Chesterfield’s sails and ahead of a home game with Gateshead they sit 16th.

Manager Allen has reacted, and this week added three new faces to his squad having last week lured striker Tom Denton to the Proact.

A treble loan deal should be enough to get them going according to the boss, with Stevenage’s Jonathan Smith, Rotherham man Joshua Kayode and Boreham Wood attacker Gozie Ugwu all in-coming.

"I think the fans have been very patient and very supportive,” Allen said at his media briefing. “I was expecting us to be right at the top, challenging all the way. I'm very disappointed because we've not got anywhere near enough points and the performances at times have been not good enough.

"We have been unlucky and every manager I talk to and says what a good team we are and at the end, we'll be there. I don't want to talk about the end, I want to talk about now and I want to get some action now, to repay the faith of the supporters and all those people who have paid for season tickets.

"I haven't got what I wanted and I haven't got what I expected, but I will get it."
