After Another Heed Win, Watson Says 'We'll Get Better'

Steve Watson saw surprise package Gateshead make it three from three but warned: we’ll get better after his side overcame Dover at the International Stadium, writes Tom Scott.

Just as they did against Salford on Tuesday night, the Heed had to come from behind to claim all three points after falling behind to Jamie Allen’s first-half goal for the visitors.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Steve Watson said he was satisfied with the win despite his side not playing at their best.

“I’m every bit as satisfied as I was on Tuesday but for totally different reasons,” he said. Tuesday, we passed the ball around well against a team full of good footballers and we managed to carve them open.

“But today, it was very difficult to get the ball down to play, they followed us man to man all over the pitch. I thought we defended well at the end when they kept coming at us.

“We just didn’t play the same sort of stuff that we have been playing but you’ll get days like that. When you’re not playing well and you’re winning games, you’ve got to be happy.

“I think that’s the first time this summer I’ve had to tell them that their passing was untidy, but we got three points at the end of it and that’s what we wanted,” he added.

After a rollercoaster summer on Tyneside, Gateshead have started the league season in perfect fashion, but Watson doesn’t want anyone to ahead of themselves just yet.

“We will get better on the ball than today, we’ll get more confident on the ball than today but obviously you’re not going to play brilliantly every day, but we found a way to win which is great, but nobodies getting carried away.

He added, “We can’t allow ourselves to be anything less than 100% focused and committed and confident.”
