5 National League Things We Have Learned So Far!

By Sam Elliott

Every July you’ll hear those famous words ‘get ready...this’ll be the best season ever!’

In truth of course, none of us knows what’s ahead. It’s all a bit of a wild guessing game.

It could be all over by February, each other the three leagues done and dusted, none of our sides having a great FA Cup run and there could be 0-0’s wherever you look.

Thankfully, it looks just as exciting as we billed it to be!

We’re pretty pleased by what we’ve seen so far and although nobody is really looking at the tables in mid-August, you can’t blame us for having a sneaky peek!

The first four games across the National League divisions have given us a few clues. So let’s take a closer look.

Thrillers. And Plenty of them.

We all love defenders. You know the ones, they head bricks and wear their hearts on their sleeves. Even a point being 2-0 down at half-time isn’t good enough for these guys.

But alas, the forwards seem to be having their wicked way so far.

So far, we have seen some classics. Alfreton 3-3 Kidderminster, FC United 3-4 Ashton, Spennymoor 4-4 Altrincham, Kidderminster 3-3 Ashton and on Tuesday Dover 4-3 Havant. More of the same, please.

Sharp-shooters

Yes we’ve seen some belters already, but it’s not just in those matches where the floodgates have opened.

Take Saturday for example. In the National League North alone we saw 46 goals go in - that’s an average of over four per game!

We probably wouldn’t have been mentioning it if it wasn’t for the shock scoreline of the season: Blyth Spartans 8-1 Chester.

Not so sharp-shooters!

Poor old Nuneaton Borough. Their fans haven’t had much to cheers so far. Well, anything actually.

That was until eight minutes from time on Tuesday night when they notched their first goal of the season.

East Thurrock United in the National League South also only have one goal, while Aldershot Town only notched for the first time against struggling Dagenham in midweek.

Wonder goals.

We know, we’re a little bias. But we think if you want some to see great goals, the National League brings them to you by the bucket load.

Gateshead called an end to their Goal of the Season contest on the first day of the season thanks to Greg Olley’s beautiful chip against Maidenhead.

Head to the website to see Michael Green’s rocket for Eastleigh against Barnet, or Andy Bond’s incredible 45 yarder for AFC Fylde last night. Seeing is believing.

Sam looks super human so far.

There’s been some impressive starts. Who would have had Chorley down as North leaders four games in after their summer issues? Same with Gateshead in the National League.

But Steve Watson’s Heed are being kept off top spot by Wrexham and their goal difference. New manager Sam Ricketts has hit the ground running and the Red Dragons are playing with style and substance.

It’s five long years since they even made the National League play-offs. Carry on like this and they won’t made them this season, either!
